The Wimbledon Charity Ball 2014

The leading food and support services specialist sailed past the milestone during Magical May, the Compass-wide initiative which challenges each of its 10,000 units to raise £100 for CRUK during the month. Each year thousands of colleagues take part in locally planned fundraising activities from bake sales, quizzes and fancy dress days to raffles, car washes and donation stations.

Compass added more than £100,000 to this fundraising total in June at its annual Wimbledon Charity Ball. Held on the middle Sunday of the Championships at The Gatsby Club, Compass’ Keith Prowse team provided hospitality for 450 guests who enjoyed a three course meal designed by renowned chef Albert Roux, before a charity auction.

More recently, it also launched a company-wide promotion with two of its best selling sandwiches within its core sandwich range, making it easy for customers to support its charity partner. Now for every prawn mayonnaise or egg and cress sandwich purchased from this range, 10p goes directly to Cancer Research UK.

Internally, over the past year Compass promoted the “Let’s Walk all over Cancer” campaign at individual, team and sector level to encourage more active lifestyles whilst raising funds at the same time. Medirest – Compass’ Healthcare business – recently completed two city walks in London and Leeds involving 190 participants and raising over £16,000.

Compass Group UK and Ireland’s Managing Director, Dennis Hogan commented: “I am incredibly proud that fantastic Compass colleagues have raised £1.5 million to support the important work of Cancer Research UK. This is a great way to mark our successful six year partnership. I would like to personally thank every single person who has helped raise money for this extremely worthwhile cause and we’ll continue our journey to the next milestone - £2 million.”

The £1.5m raised by Compass Group UK and Ireland equates to running a laboratory at the world-class Cancer Research UK London Research Institute for 18 months. This is a hub of groundbreaking research, where scientists are working tirelessly to understand how and why cancer develops. This research could reveal new ways to tackle cancer and make vital progress to beat it.

Harpal Kumar, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Executive Board at Cancer Research UK said: “We would like to thank everyone at Compass Group for their amazing fundraising efforts throughout the past six years of our partnership. We have seen some of the most innovative fundraising initiatives across the company and have been proud to work in partnership. Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding so the funds raised from companies like Compass Group are invaluable to our life saving research.

Reaching this £1.5m milestone is a tremendous achievement and we are excited about working together further to build on this incredible work.  It is because of partners like Compass Group that we believe we can beat cancer sooner, so our thank you goes to everyone who has been part of this so far and I look forward to what I am sure will be a successful next stage in the partnership.”
