Pillar four: Environment


As part of the largest food service and support services business in the world, Compass Group UK & Ireland understands the impact that it has on the environment.
From thousands of colleagues journeying to work each day, to thousands of ovens being switched on, and with more than a million food deliveries every year, it is essential that we fully understand and take firm action on our environmental impacts.

A systematic approach

In 2011, we achieved business-wide certification for ISO 14 001 – Environmental Management Systems.  This certification, which initially lasts three years, helps to ensure that the environment remains front of mind across our operations, whether our own offices or our 10,000 client sites.  To address the challenges presented by the size and diversity of our business, we have invested in employee environmental e-learning, a centralised HSE management website, and a support network of over 150 HSE Champions within our business.

We have a rolling programme of ISO audits, some performed by in-house specialists, others by accredited auditors, ISOQAR, that check performance against standards across our estate.  Where clients want site-specific ISO 14 001, we work with them to ensure that our operations not only pass the test but fully embed the behaviours.

We are compliant with all environmental legislation and continue to meet all disclosure and reporting requirements, often via our parent company, Compass Group PLC.

Carbon Reduction – transforming our supply chain

WorkingGreen and Simple logo with our principal logistics partner Brakes, Compass adapted its supply route and consolidated a number of core suppliers to make deliveries through a single distribution path.  As a result, 300,000 deliveries were removed from our supply route between 2011 and 2012.  This translated into a reduction in carbon emissions across the UK and Ireland business of more than 4,500 tonnes per annum – enough to power 900 UK homes for a year.  We are now implementing the next phase of the “Green and Simple” programme, a move to multi-temperature vehicles that will remove significant additional miles and carbon from our supply chain.

Our work in this area was recognised by industry peers at the 2013 Footprint Awards, where Compass was awarded the Environmentally Friendly Logistics Award for “Green & Simple”.

Waste Management

We know that the sourcing of our food and the customer experience when eating with us is central to our success; being responsible about the waste we generate is just as vital and allows us to own fully the end to end food journey.  We have measured food waste in our business since 2007.

In June 2012, we became signatories to the WRAP Voluntary Agreement on food and packaging waste.This commits us to two deliverables by the end of 2015:

  • A reduction in food waste and packaging waste by 5%; and

  • An increase in the rate of food waste and packaging waste being recycled, sent to Anaerobic Digestion or composted to at least 70%.

We are on track to meet these targets.

We annually recycle more than one million litres of used cooking oil, which is converted into biodiesel to power parts of our supply chain.  This has saved over 2,200 tonnes of carbon.

Working More Sustainably 

Compass Group UK & Ireland continues to promote green business practices such as teleconferencing, flexible working and best practice in regards to recycling, travel and communications throughout all of our business operations and corporate offices.

The average Co2g/km of our car fleet continues to fall, currently at an average of 118g/km on 860 cars, a figure that is well ahead of Government targets and the average emissions levels of new vehicles in the UK.  We are now working on achieving the same outcomes for all our commercial vehicles.
